AI-301 was flown by a hikotaicho. The crew was: Pilot: Lt. Mitsuo Matsuzaki, Observer: Lt. Cmdr. Mitsuo Fuchida
and Gunner/radioman: PO1c Tokunobu Mizuki. AI-301 has three horizontal tail's stripes = for the Hikotaicho or
carrier group leader. B5N2 with two horizontal tail's stripes = it was led by a Buntaicho or leader of 9 aircraft.
B5N2 with one horizontal tail's stripe = it was led by a Shotaicho or leader of 3 aircraft. B5N2 with no horizontal
tail's stripe = a wingman. Val and Zeros have these tail's stripes too, means the position of its leader.

Commanders Mitsuo Fuchida and Minoru Genda designed the plans specifically for this attack.
Japanese B5N2 aircraft were organized in Buntais of 5 aircraft each. These were further broken down into
2 shotais, one of 3 machines and the other of 2. This was not the usual formation, but was to be able to hit the
maximum number of targets. Fuchida survived the war, and afterwards, he converted to Jesus Christ,
became a minister, preaching the Gospel around the world. He was born in 1902, and died in 1976.

The B5N2 tail code has been reduced in size to allow the placement to be higher on the tail which allows
the whole code to be shown. There is no "1" on the lower surface of the main wings. AND the flags and pennants
displayed are not those shown on 7 Dec (suggested by the takeoff scene) but on 3 Dec 1941. The pennants detail
the "DG" signal raised on 3 Dec which was the code of the day that duplicated the famous "Z" signal
by Admiral Togo in the Battle of Tsushima in 1905.

AI-316 was flown by a shotaicho, PO2c Yuichi Takizawa (pilot), indicated by the single red horizontal tail stripe. AI-316 is a Nakajima B5N2, type 97, model 3 from the Akagi Air Group in December 1941. This machine participated in the Pearl Harbor attack, carrying a 800kg bomb. It was part of the high-level bomber group which was personally led by Fuchida.

Nakajima B5N2 “KATE” AI-316 en route to Oahu. This frame just barely shows both wings' dark green camouflage.
Note the fuel/oil "status" stencil on the cowl (style of box is different for "ZERO" & "VAL"); the red spot
on the top of the fuselage just forward of the canopy (oil fill cap); the angle stripes to aid torpedo runs; just a tiny bit
of the wire "sight" on top of the cowl; and a bit of the bomb shackle. AI-316 belongs to one Shotaicho and has a
red command stripe without white piping. INFO CREDIT: Mr. David Aiken

AI-316 and AI-317 B5N2s’ photo came from the movie camera in the lead plane of a five planes formation.
The only Akagi movie camera in the high-level unit on December 7, 1941, was in the “KATE” flown by
(Chief Petty Officer) CPO Koji Otani, with senior officer Lt Izumi Furukawa as navigator/observer (thus a two striped tail for Buntaicho’s plane). This was a five plane formation. The leader of the original three plane formation was supplemented by two planes from another three plane unit (usually a Shotaicho and one of his wingmen). INFO CREDIT: Mr. David Aiken.
